Now Offering Mentoring Sessions

One thing that I've enjoyed about going full time with my photography, is that not only am I able to really focus on something I love, but I've also had the opportunity to discover that I really enjoy teaching/mentoring. I've worked with a few photographers now, as well as assisting some of my friends' small businesses (BoundingHound and Memories in the Making) with brand consulting. I have enjoyed developing my own brand so much, and have really enjoyed helping others really round out their business by giving it personal touches that make it uniquely them.

Teaching is always something I thought I would want to do, but find that one-on-one is the best fit for me right now. I have loved teaching my assistant Coelle the behind-the-scenes aspect to my business, as well as teaching her how to shoot. It's been so rewarding for me, that I decided I would love to start offering mentoring sessions as an aside to my photography business. I'm working on getting a page on my website dedicated to this, but am currently offering a discount to the first 3 mentoring sessions that are booked!

These mentoring sessions can be customized to your needs, but the basic package (and the one I'm discounting for the first 3 bookings) includes the following. Please email me at if you're interested in working together! *Note: I do have certain restrictions on specific topics when working with local (within a 40 mile radius of the Iowa City area) photographers, but I'm open to brainstorming and helping develop your own voice/business identity!

What to Wear: Spring Engagement Session [Iowa City, IA Engagement Photographer]

As the snow has melted away, it finally feels as though spring is coming! It's a busy time of year, but with such gorgeous weather and the flowers blooming, spring is a perfect time to schedule your engagement session. Coelle put together three looks to give you some style inspiration as we look ahead to warmer weather. Use these ideas to shop your own closet and put together something fabulous, or I've provided the links if you are in love with any of the specific items below.

Also, styling for sessions can be added onto any collection if you want Coelle to personally come shop your closet with you! :)

 Casual Denim Look

2013, what a year!

So this post may be a few weeks late, but you know how time flies. ;) Anyways, I just wanted to take a minute to post an image from each of my sessions last year - I can't thank you all enough for your support, encouragement, and for choosing me to photograph you & your loved ones. Not to be too sappy (ok, maybe just a little sappiness is perfectly acceptable) but I am so grateful to you all, without you I wouldn't have been able to pursue something I love full time. I hope to see you all again this year!

Connor [Odebolt, IA Senior Pictures]

Senior pictures are not something I normally do, but this was for family - basically, as Connor is my brother in law Colby's youngest sibling. So, on an extremely cold Sunday afternoon, we grabbed a few photos for him. Odebolt has a surprising number of cool spots for photos, and we also got some with his snowmobile and dirt bike as requested (not pictured, but they will be in the gallery Connor!). I hope you guys like this sneak peek! Special thanks to Colby for making Connor laugh, you're the best.

Josie: 6 Months [Iowa City, IA Child and Family Lifestyle Photography]

It was SO great to see Josie, and her parents Pattie & Benton recently for her 6 month session. This little girl is such a cutie pie, and it is always fun to see how my newborns have grown since I photographed them last!

Josie's cousins were in town, so we got a couple photos of them as well...and we can't forget Ruby (one of my favorite pups!!). This little family is the sweetest, and I can't wait to see Josie again at her 1 year session!

Pattie and Benton - Thank you both so much for a wonderful session and for inviting me back into your home for Josie's 6 month milestone. It is always great to see you guys, I hope you love the sneak peek!

New for 2014! [Hair + Makeup by Kayla]

I am always thinking about how to better my business, and make every experience the absolute best it can be for my clients. I had this idea awhile ago, but never had the perfect hair stylist/makeup artist, until I met Kayla. I met her last spring when I photographed her niece Elliot, got to know her better when I started going to her for eyelash extensions at Tru Salon, and then photographed her adorable family this fall. This girl is SUPER talented, and I'm so happy she has joined me in making the newborn session experience even better for new moms.

I asked Kayla to share a little bit about herself, how she got into doing makeup professionally and what she feels is the biggest benefit to having hair and makeup done prior to the session. This is what she said...

"I have always enjoyed art and was an art major in college. I decided studio art wasn't what I wanted to do for a career, so I explored other options within the art world. I found makeup and discovered it was a perfect mix of art and fashion. Fell in love and never looked back :) I've been doing makeup professionally for about 4 years now. My favorite part of makeup is obviously the art of it, but also the perfection. I'm a huge perfectionist and makeup allows for this! I love making women feel good about themselves, and showing them simple tricks to enhance what they already have.

The biggest benefit to having hair and makeup done prior to a session is the assurance that your best features will be captured in your photos. Too often it happens that beautiful eyes are lost in pictures! Makeup is ultimately creating an illusion. It can work for you or against you. This is precisely why it is so important to have your makeup applied correctly in order to enhance your natural beauty. A blowout will give you a soft natural style that will last through the day with no worries of styling your own hair!"

This service has been added onto my newborn packages, and is also a part of the engagement experience for brides to be! :) I adore Kayla, of course, but here's some thoughts from Rachel, who was the first client to benefit from this additional service!

"I'll be honest, after the last few weeks of pregnancy and giving birth to our new daughter, Lillian, the only thing on my mind was sleep. I was exhausted and felt as far from camera-ready as can be. It's an emotional rollercoaster with those crazy post-baby hormones, so not having to think about my hair or makeup for the newborn session with Jen definitely took my stress level down a few notches. I'm also a makeup application idiot (you're supposed to use more than 1 color eye shadow??) and on more than one occasion, I have actually gotten a round brush stuck in my hair while trying to get fancy with the blow dryer.

I can't say enough about how awesome and professional Kayla was. It was SO nice to have her come to my house, and all I had to do was shower and relax in my kitchen chair. I'm sure everyone has had a bad experience getting their makeup or hair done for a wedding or special event. You know the one where you look in the mirror afterward to see a glamour shots gone wrong "makeover" with blue eye shadow, fushia lipstick and poofy bangs, which makes you regret not doing everything yourself. I was relieved when right away, Kayla asked how I usually do my hair and make-up to ensure I would look natural in the pictures and feel like myself. While she worked, she talked about her experiences with her 1 year old little girl, Jae, so it was great to get some baby tips as well! I was very pleased with how it all turned out and even had a friend comment on how great my hair looked in the first few pictures that Jen posted on her blog.

I would recommend this service to any new mom who needs a reminder that they are beautiful and deserve to be pampered. Between Kayla and Jen, I couldn't be happier with how our session turned out. I will cherish the experience and pictures forever!"

Ellie: 1 Year [Coralville, IA Child and Family Photography]

I truly cannot believe Ellie is turning one soon! It just seems crazy, like I photographed her as a newborn just a few months ago! Time flies, I guess. :)

Anyways, Ellie's one year session took place at their home on a windy, rainy Sunday just over a week ago. This little peanut is SO darn cute, I can hardly stand it! I love all of her hair, and she was loving hanging out with her reflection in the mirror. It was pretty adorable.

Elizabeth and Eric, thank you so much for choosing me to come back and photograph Ellie's one year milestone!! It has been such a pleasure getting to know you guys better, and I hope you like this sneak peek!

Quinn + The L Family [West Des Moines, IA Child and Family Photography]

I can't believe Quinn is turning 1 - her actual birthday is today, so everyone wish her a happy first birthday!! :)

Nicole and James have some of the cutest kids EVER. I think I may steal Oliver someday, but shh, let's keep that a secret for now. ;) Oliver was under the weather the day we did Quinn's cake smash, so I swung by the following weekend since I was in Des Moines anyways to take a few more photos of the entire family.

Nicole and James - it's always so great to see you all! I hope you like this sneak peek. Tell Quinn happy birthday from me!
