Happy National Dog Day!

My friend Jess pointed out that today is National Dog Day (which was started in 2004 to recognize the massive number of shelter pets looking for a good home and to encourage their adoption)! So, what better way to celebrate than with some adorable puppy faces (including my own 2 rascals, of course) here on the blog? I love when clients bring their dogs to their session, it's so much fun for me as I'm obsessed with puppies, and it's nice to include every member of your family. :)

The two that rule my world...

Life via Instagram: Summertime

I truly can't believe how fast this summer has flown by, I hope you all have been enjoying the beautiful weather we've been having! I've been spending a lot of time shooting weddings, maternity, and tiny little newborns the past few months - but I've found some time to have a little fun and relax as well. Here's a peek at what I've been up to, via Instagram...

(top row) - flowers from Jess and Dan, trying to get back on the yoga train, date night with Josh at Lincoln Cafe, spending the relaxing on our anniversary in mid-July, sweet treats from Amy at Sprinkles & Company.
(bottom row) - Clara resting, a fortune I hope comes true, new eyelash extensions by Kayla at Tru Salon, new look courtesy of Holly @ Tru Salon, dog sitting Ms. Wiggles (aka Allie).

Hope your week is going well! Just a quick note, weekday sessions are now available starting October 1st! Also - I am full for weddings for May and June 2014. So exciting!! Looking forward to everything coming up this fall and next year - feeling very blessed.

This is Our Life: Project 52 [Week 6 & 11: Good Morning & Play]

Wow, I have been seriously neglecting my personal "this is our life" project!! I will try to get back on track, but as wedding season approaches I can't make any promises. :)

For week 11, the theme was "play", but this photo also covers week 6, which was "good morning". Two birds with one stone, right?

Our weekend mornings are often spent playing with the puppies, as Clara wakes us up bright and early and is in play mode for 2-3 hours. Her favorite game includes whacking Einstein in the face with any toy she can find, though she also loves playing fetch with the smallest, squeakiest toy she owns.

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. This snow is pretty but I'm wondering when spring will actually arrive. I'm craving green grass and beautiful sunsets for some outdoor photo sessions! :)

Friday Randomness: On the Farm [Personal]

A couple of weeks ago, one of my 2014 brides Kyle emailed me to share that two baby goats were born on the farm she shares with her fiancé Mike. You see, when I met Kyle and learned that they owned goats, I could hardly contain my excitement. I'm sure you all know by now that I LOVE dogs. But, you may not know that I also LOVE goats. In fact, I've even gone as far as to research whether or not goats are allowed in the North Liberty city limits. (Sadly, they are not.)

Anyways, when Kyle emailed me about the baby goats, we set up a time that I could stop by and get my fix. So, on a soggy Sunday morning a couple of weeks ago, I pulled on my rainboots and headed out to meet the new babies.

Not only did I get to meet the goats (and a multitude of sheep) but I even got to hold little Cocoa the goat, who is being bottle fed. It was so sweet, he even fell asleep in my arms!! Here are some photos Josh took on the farm, and I snuck a few in of Duke (a beautiful boxer!) as well. I'm so framing one of these for my office.

Happy Friday!

This is Our Life: Project 52 [Week 4: A Different Perspective]

Life project: Week 4 [A Different Perspective]

Week 4 in my project 52 had the theme "A Different Perspective", which interestingly enough, applies perfectly to another post that I was working on in my head. On Friday, I traveled to Kansas City to listen to Justin & Mary Marantz speak and teach at the final stop of their "What's Next" Tour. I left feeling exhausted, but incredibly inspired and ready to continue on my journey with a new perspective.

Not only are Mary and Justin incredibly talented photographers, but they are also kind, humble, and inspiring individuals. I'm so very thankful that I had the opportunity to attend and learn from them firsthand. Mary began the day talking about fear and how to move forward toward your dreams. She said several things that resonated with me (like 5 hours worth of things!!) but one major one was that sometimes, we are our own worst critics. We feel "who am I to want this?" and wait on permission to go after our dreams (which will never come, unless of course, we grant ourselves permission). Mary encouraged us to stop thinking of our dreams as opportunities, but instead as obligations. She asked, "Who sacrificed so you could achieve your dreams?" and told us that we OWE it to them to live the life we've been given. We were all given some time to write a letter to someone in our lives who sacrificed and made it possible for us to chase our dreams, and for about 15-20 minutes the room was filled with soft music, the scratching of pens, and sniffling as people wrote letters to their loved ones.

That day I wrote a letter to my mom, and I plan on mailing a copy of it to her (after I transcribe it into something legible!) but I wanted to share a bit of it here on the blog.

Mom,

Thank you for raising me to believe that I could do anything I put my mind to...for always believing in my dreams, and for never making me feel foolish. I know you sacrificed a lot for me - as a young adult you put your dreams on hold so that you could raise a little girl and I will always be thankful for that. You gave me confidence that I could do anything I wanted in life, pushed me to never give up, taught me to always give 100%, and you helped shape the strong work ethic that I have today. I hope that I have made you proud by doing work that matters, documenting people's journeys so they can look back on their lives and have tangible proof that they were beautiful, geniune, and loved.    ~ Jen

Mary challenged us to stop waiting on someday, as "the biggest lie we tell ourselves is that there will always be more time". I refuse to live a life full of regret. In 40, 50...60 years, I want to look back and be able to say that the work that I did mattered, and that I left everything out on the table.

"The world is better when you're in it, and in it all the way." ~ Mary Marantz

*This post is mainly about Mary's section but I also wanted to say a huge, huge thank you to Justin Marantz for being willing to share his photography genius with everyone who attended. I learned so much and I am so excited to apply his techniques to future sessions and weddings. I hope someday I can attend their Walk thru a Wedding workshop, as I know I would continue to learn a ton from them both. Also thank you to Ashley, Liz & Ryan, and Jeremy for putting your lives and businesses on hold to help Justin & Mary put on this tour, the experience was invaluable to me. Also a huge thank you to all of the photographers who attended the KC stop, it was wonderful meeting you all - especially Christine (you are an amazing individual and it was an honor getting to know you! I hope our paths will cross again, I know great things are in your future!).

Happy Birthday Clara! [Personal]

Today Clara turns 1 year old - she made it through puppy-hood (relatively) unscathed, though I'm not sure I can say the same for us! :)

It's been an interesting 9 months since she arrived at our home, disrupting Einstein's calm life, and waking us up two or three times a night for the first few months. She loves to hunt for socks, harass her brother Einstein, attend her new agility class, and is way too happy in the mornings for all of our liking (Josh, Ein, and I are all NOT morning people). All in all she's grown into a sweet pup, who makes me laugh almost every day.

Happy Birthday Clara!

This is Our Life: Project 52 [Week 3: This Makes Me Wish I Could Freeze Time]

Week 3 of my project 52 has the theme "this makes me wish I could freeze time". There are obviously a lot of things that I could post about for this week's theme - hanging out on the couch with Josh and the pups, reading a good book on a cold winter day, or enjoying an evening out with friends. However, Josh snapped this photo today of me doing one of my favorite things - petting my two furry friends while they snuggled on the couch, and I knew it would be perfect.

I know that our life isn't always this calm, or relaxed, and that the pups don't always spend this much time in close proximity (Einstein is becoming a bit crochety in his old age). In fact, shortly after this photo was taken, Clara jumped up and started biting Einstein's face and he wanted off the couch immediately to go explore the backyard...where he could be ALONE (thankyouverymuch!). Peaceful moments like this are never quite long enough.

This is Our Life: Project 52 [Week 2: This Makes Me Laugh/Smile]

I'm a couple of days late on last week's photo project, partly because it was really hard to think of what I could photograph that makes me laugh. There are so many things that make me laugh, such as the fact that on January 15th we STILL have our Christmas tree up (seriously, we are so lazy right now!!), or that Clara chases Einstein under the bed every morning (she is such a morning person, it's almost painful), or Dan when he tells me "your mom" jokes.

Finally I settled on taking a photo of a photo that makes me laugh. This weekend, my sister Bri and her husband Colby celebrated their marriage with a reception in their hometown (they were married in Las Vegas this fall) and had a photobooth area. We all had a great time trying on the props, and this photo is one of my favorites because it includes me and all of my siblings being completely silly. Also, is it just me or is my sister Rachel totally channeling Slash from Guns & Roses with that hat and glasses?

It's kind of hard to read, but the chalkboard says "DONE AT 6" (all one word though), which is my parents' license plate.

2013: Looking Ahead

gustoff-289 copy
It's that time again (though admittedly, a little late) as we all reflect on the previous year and resolve to better ourselves in the coming months. Last year I made several resolutions, which I think I made some good improvements on (maybe not so well on the finding balance thing though!!) and was overall very happy with the way 2012 went.

For 2013 my main goal, particularly in business, is not to be afraid. In the fall of 2011, I made the excruciating decision that in late 2013 I would be leaving the full time job I've held for now 10 1/2 years and going full time with my photography business. It was a particularly painful and difficult decision because I really LOVE my full time job. I work with a young man with a disability and love him and his family dearly - they are truly more than just the family I work for, they are just family - period. Even though I am excited about pursuing my passion for photography on a full time basis, my heart is also heavy with dread as I anticipate not seeing Dan and his family every day and sharing my life with them the way I do now (though they will ALWAYS, ALWAYS be a big part of my life).

So, in regards to my resolution this year - I am making the commitment to push myself - to take risks, to stop making excuses based out of fear of failure or rejection. To pursue my dreams of being a full time photographer by going for it 100%, putting everything on the table, no holds barred. I don't want to look back on this year and feel as though I didn't give it everything I had, and so off I go in preparation for going full time - wish me luck!

What are you resolving to change or do in 2013? I'd love to hear about it!

This is Our Life: Project 52 [Week 1: Evening Ritual]

I wanted to do a 365 project last year, but somehow never got around to it. So, for 2013, I am going to be following Paint the Moon's "This is Our Life" project (see more info HERE). After looking through my files from last year, I realized I had taken very few personal photos. Granted, we don't have children (just the puppies) but it's nice to look back on the past year and reflect, so this year I thought would be a great time to start documenting the every day moments (but only once a week, as I have to be realistic about my time commitments!).

The first week's theme is "evening rituals". We have many, but one that has been a regular occurrence since Clara joined our family in April 2012 is documented below. Sock hunting, one of her favorite things to do since she figured out how to launch herself into the laundry basket. This is a nightly ritual, though I neglected to take any photos of the disarray she leaves in her wake as she drags them all over the house.

What are your evening rituals?

A look back at 2012...

I don't know about you guys, but 2012 seemed to fly by in a blur. I don't know if it was the fact that we never really had much of a winter, or the summer was so hot that it blew by in a haze of humid days and too much time in the air conditioning. I do know that my days were jam packed with weekday obligations and activities, and I filled my weekends up with photographing families, babies, and weddings. I met so many amazing people, and was given some opportunities I'd secretly hoped for but never believed they would happen...until they did (thanks Mindy!!!).

In my down time, 2012 consisted of traveling to Denver to meet my new niece in February, getting a new puppy in April, our 5 year wedding anniversary, participating in the Color Run, and being a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding. 2012 was a year of many gains, peppered with a bit of loss as well when a good friend moved away in June, and we reluctantly said good-bye to a dear family friend in September.

It's hard to say what 2013 will bring with it, but I hope that it brings continued happiness, health, and opportunities. I know that it will be full of adventure, photography, and love. Here's to a wonderful 2013!

Happy Holidays from all of us!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your friends and families! Thank you for all of your support in 2012, my plans and expectations for the year were far exceeded thanks to all of you!! I can't thank you enough for all of the opportunities you brought my way this year, and as always, it was an absolute pleasure documenting you and your families. I hope to see you all again in 2013!

Happy Thanksgiving!

clara-0502 copy

I feel like this year I have so much to be thankful for - great friends, family, and two little puppies that keep me on my toes. I'm so grateful for incredible clients who allow me to do what I love, thank you all so much for every opportunity you've given me this year. I'm also very thankful for Mindy Myers, who gave me the chance to second shoot with her this year. I learned so much and had such a wonderful time!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving, enjoy every minute with your loved ones!

Life via Instagram: My Sister's Wedding

Those of you that read this blog know that last weekend, my younger sister Rachel got married to a wonderful man named Matt. I really wanted to just relax and enjoy the day, but since my phone was nearby most of the evening - I couldn't resist taking a few snapshots. So, here's my view of Rachel and Matt's wedding (reception mostly, with maybe one or two from the rehearsal dinner) via Instagram.

Hope you guys have a great weekend!

This weekend my sister and her fiance Matt are tying the knot! I am so thrilled for the two of them, and am excited for a fun weekend ahead (but it will be strange to be in front of the camera instead of behind it!).

Rachel - I have so many fun memories of us growing up - playing marathon sessions of Barbie, pretending we had a roller skating rink in the garage (you were the best concession stand lady!), and being baton twirlers in the circus with you using a painted stick as a baton and belted sweater vest instead of a leotard because I had the good stuff. You have always been a patient, kind, and thoughtful sister - and all of those qualities will serve you well as a wife. Matt is incredibly lucky to have you in his life, but I know you are lucky too - Matt is a funny, caring, creative, and loyal man who will make a wonderful husband. I wish you both the best this weekend, and always as you begin your lives (officially) together.

Early congrats to Rachel and Matt - love you both!

Thankful Thursday

einstein-spring12

I feel like it's been awhile since Einstein has been up on the blog, here's a photo from a pre-Clara evening back in March.

I have so much to be grateful for right now, and since it has been awhile since I did a Thankful Thursday post I thought it was a good time to do another!

Here's what I'm thankful for at the moment:
  • Mindy Myers, who gave me an incredible opportunity to be her second shooter for several weddings this summer/fall. I have admired her work for a long time (she was our wedding photographer when we got married 5 years ago) and am having the most wonderful time photographing weddings with her!!
  • Air conditioning, especially after the brutal heat we've had this summer.
  • My fabulous clients, who have been so supportive and wonderful this year - I am grateful every day for each one of them.
  • Lincoln Wine Bar for the best pizza EVER.
  • My iPhone (I upgraded from an HTC Evo in June)! I don't know what I did without this thing, love it.
  • Vacation! I've been in the midst of a "stay-cation" this week and am loving sleeping in and catching up on stuff around the house. Today the plan is seeing Batman and possibly doing some shopping!
  • And of course, as always - my husband Josh and two little furballs Einstein and Clara.

How I spent my weekend...

This weekend we made the drive up to Minneapolis to celebrate our anniversary (had the most amazing meal at Restaurant Alma) and to participate in the Color Run with friends. Here's photo evidence of our colorful adventure:

Life via Instagram [June & July 4th]

Life has been busy lately, as I'm sure it is for all of you as well. Summer so far has been full of photo sessions, weddings (+ second shooting a few times for the insanely talented Mindy Myers - can you say dream opportunity?!), and spending time with friends, family, and the pups. Here are a few phone pics that have been captured along the way, hope your summer has been wonderful so far!

One quick note about scheduling - fall is nearly full, please consider booking early if you're thinking of doing photos this fall. October and November are all that's left at this point! This has been the most amazing year and it's only July!! I am so very grateful for everything that's come my way this year, thank you!!
